THE ARTIST:
Twardzik Ching Chor Leng’s artworks address her ongoing investigation of the dynamics of art and public space. In the interactive works viewers take on the role of the artist as they arrange and rearrange, transforming the formal qualities in the artwork each time an object is moved. In her earthworks the precise and interruptive appearance of voids in the otherwise well groomed cityspace jars the passerby into awareness of the world beneath the veneer of the city. In the context of the public space the artworks become on-site studies of social behavior, attitudes towards property, and of the possibilities for positive interaction among community members. By using the language of contemporary architecture, such as, stainless steel, plywood, acrylic glass and the excavation and transplantation of earth, the boundaries regarding personal behavior in public spaces become camouflaged. In adapting the artwork to the specific qualities of spaces and the people who inhabit them, the viewer is involved in a unique type of interaction that underscores the theory that art can exist anywhere.
