THE ARTIST: On Why She Makes Art

To feel alive! To be creative is to know how it feels to be like God. It is the thrill of not knowing where you’ll end, working with whatever you have (materials/tools/skills) to tell a story. Not any story but my very own.

THE STRANGEST ENCOUNTER INSIDE THIS WHITE CUBE:

Made in China?

This was an art assignment from class. We were exploring the use of East Indian ink, painting a Chinese landscape.

I liken my experience of making this piece to ‘drinking espresso out of a Chinese tea cup’. The ‘contents’ in this instance, however, is the Chinese landscape made with western paint brush technique with East Indian ink. My classmates were intrigued by my name stamp. If I weren’t Chinese, would this be considered a piece of western or Chinese art? Or would it be like my friend PEK says, “Never mind, art is art.”
