THE ARTIST:
Lai Say Beng is a senior lecturer in the School of Mathematics and Science at Singapore Polytechnic (SP), whose passion for art is matched by his passion for teaching mathematics. Say Beng picked up ceramic art as a hobby way back in 2000 and is still exploring ways of expressing himself through clay. In 2004, the Art@SP exhibition was held to commemorate SP’s 50th anniversary where Say Beng contributed 40 of his ceramic pieces to help raise funds for needy students.
THE MAKING:
White Pearl and Green Pearl were wheel thrown from the raw form and finished in Shino and Celadon glazes, fired in a gas kiln to 1280oC. Reduction at 1200oC achieved the subtle variation of the color on each pot.
In line with helping to raise funds for a needy cause, this pairing of ‘White Pearl and Green Pearl’ expresses the link between Ipoh and Singapore where artists can collaborate in one expression of love through art.
